Special Session 1

Topic: Surface Treatment of Biomedical Materials

This special Issue covers recent advances in the surface treatment of biomedical materials, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites used in orthopedic, dental, cardiovascular, and tissue engineering applications. Topics include surface modification methods such as coating, anodization, plasma treatment, laser processing, chemical conversion, vacuum process, and biofunctionalization. Studies addressing corrosion resistance, wear behavior, antibacterial activity, biocompatibility, osseointegration, cell response, drug delivery, and long-term stability are welcome. Both experimental and theoretical works, as well as interdisciplinary studies combining materials science, biology, and engineering, are encouraged.

Special Session Chair

Prof. Shih-Fu Ou, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, Taiwan

Shih-Fu, Ou started his master study since 2003 in the department of mechanical engineering at National Taiwan University of science and technology for research of calcium phosphate cement phase transformation. Afterwards, he obtained his Ph.D. degree in 2011 from the department of mechanical engineering at National Taiwan University for research the anodic oxidation of titanium alloys applied in biomedical implants. Then, he was postdoctoral research for fabricating and analyzing bioceramic (hydroxyapatite, zirconia, and composite) in the department of biomaterial and tissue engineering at Taipei medical university. Since 2019, he is professor of department of mold and die in National Kaohsiung university of sciences and technology. His current research is divided into three parts. The first is focused on synthesis drug-containing coating for antibacterial applications. The second is to develop organic films on biomedical alloys for implant applications. The third is to modify the surface physical and chemical properties of Ti and NiTi alloys applied as implants.
